Govt Body Type : Statutory The Union Government set up the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992. Five religious communities, viz; Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Zoroastrians (Parsis) have been notified as minority communities by the Union Government. Further vide notification detail 27th Jan 2014, Jains have also been notified as minority community. The Commission receive complaints are mostly related to police atrocities, service matters, minority educational institutions and encroachments to religious properties. Reports were called for from the concerned authorities under the Union and State Governments. On receipt of the reports, the Commission made appropriate recommendations to the respective authorities for redressal of the grievances. Composition of CommissionThe Commission shall consist of a Chairperson, a Vice Chairperson and five Members to be nominated by the Central Government from amongst persons of eminence, ability and integrity; provided that five Members including the Chairperson shall be from amongst the minority communities. Functions the Commission is required to perform following functions:-
