GI is an indication used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to its origin in that defined geographical locality.
Role Geographical Indication Tag provides similar rights and protection as intellectual properties rights, Copyright, Patent, Trademark etc. Key Aspect The GI tag in India is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, who is the Registrar of Geographical Indications and functions under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade(DIPP).The GI tag in India is regulated under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection Act), 1999 and it has came into force with effect from 15th September 2003. Under Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, GIs are covered as an element of Intellectual property rights.
