India Ideas Summit 2020

The U.S.-India Business Council's India Ideas Summit has become an institution, convening leaders in business, government and society from across the United States and India. The Summit is being hosted by the US-India Business Council. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the formation of the Council. The theme for this year’s India Ideas Summit is ‘Building a Better Future’.The virtual Summit will feature high-level presence from Indian and US government policymakers, state-level officials, and thought leaders from business and society. The Summit will witness discussions on areas including India-US cooperation and future of the relation between the two counties in a post pandemic world.
About U.S.-India Business Council 
The U.S.-India Business Council was formed in 1975 as a business advocacy organization to enlighten and encourage the private sectors of both India and United States to enhance investment flows.

India participated in virtual High-Level Segment of ECOSOC

​Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually participated in High-Level Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council session. The annual High-level Segment convenes a diverse group of high-level representatives from the Government, the private sector, civil society and academia. The theme of this year’s High-level Segment is "Multilateralism after COVID19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary”.
Set against the changing international environment and the COVID-19 pandemic, this session will focus on critical forces shaping the course of multilateralism and explore ways to bolster the global agenda through strong leadership, effective international institutions, a broadening of participation and enhanced significance of global public goods.

United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
The Economic and Social Council is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. The General Assembly selects 18 new members for ECOSOC each year for the term of 3 years with a provision that a retiring member can be re-elected. The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations.It has 54 Members, elected by the General Assembly for overlapping three-year terms.

15th India-EU (Virtual) Summit

The 15th Summit between India and the European Union (EU) was held in virtual format on 15th July 2020. India was represented by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The EU was represented by Mr. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
​The leaders decided to strengthen the EU-India Strategic Partnership, based on shared principles and values of democracy, freedom, rule of law, and respect for human rights, aiming at delivering concrete benefits for the people in the EU and India.  In this context, the EU is looking forward to India’s G20 Presidency in 2022 and its membership in the UN Security Council in 2021-2022.
  • The leaders noted mutual synergies in the field of healthcare through shared capacities, experiences and strengths in the production of pharmaceuticals and vaccines, healthcare research and development, diagnostics and treatment.
  • ​The leaders adopted the “EU-India Strategic Partnership: A Roadmap to 2025” to guide cooperation between the EU and India over the next five years. They welcomed the signing of the Euratom-India Agreement on research and development cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Turkey museum Hagia Sophia into mosque

President Tayyip Erdogan declared Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia open to Muslim prayer as a mosque on Friday after a top court ruled that the building’s conversion to a museum by modern Turkey’s founding statesman was illegal.​The Council of State, Turkey’s top administrative court, said in its ruling: “It was concluded that the settlement deed allocated it as a mosque and its use outside this character is not possible legally. The Cabinet decision in 1934 that ended its use as a mosque and defined it as a museum did not comply with laws,”
  • It was 1,500-year-old monument that is revered by Christians and Muslims alike.
  • Hagia Sophia act as focal point of both the Christian Byzantine and Muslim Ottoman empires and now one of the most visited monuments in Turkey.
