United Nations Award to Indian Army Officer Major Suman Gawani

Major Suman Gawani, an Indian Army officer who served as a women peacekeeper with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in 2019 is being awarded the prestigious “United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the year Award” on 29 May 2020. She will receive the award from the UN Secretary General Mr Antonio Guterres during an online ceremony being organised at the UN Headquarters, New York on the occasion of International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.  Major Suman served as a Military observer in UNMISS from November 2018 to December 2019. While at the mission, she was the principal focal point of contact for gender issues for Military Observers in the mission. The officer encouraged participation in joint military patrols to maintain gender balance, irrespective of the hardships under extreme field conditions.

About United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the year Award
The award, created in 2016, recognizes the dedication and effort of individual military peacekeepers in promoting the UN principles on Women, Peace and Security in peace operations. Women peacekeepers are nominated by the heads and force commanders of peace operations.

Chamba Tunnel Inaugurated

Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari today inaugurated the breakthrough event of Chamba Tunnel under Chardham Pariyojana through video conference mode. Border Roads Organisation (BRO) achieved this major milestone by digging up a 440 m long Tunnel below the busy Chamba town on Rishikesh-Dharasu road Highway (NH 94). The breakthrough was completed amidst threat of COVID-19 and nationwide lockdown. The construction of tunnel was a challenging task in terms of weak soil strata, continuous water seepage, heavy built up area on top thereby chances of sinking of houses, land acquisition issues, restrictions during COVID lockdown etc.Under prestigious Chardham Project with approximate length of 889 Km, BRO is constructing 250 Km of National Highways leading to holy shrine Gangotri and Badrinath.

“Hunar Haat”  2020 with the theme of “Local to Global”

“Hunar Haat” to restart from September 2020 with the theme of “Local to Global”. “Hunar Haat”, which provides market and opportunity to master artisans and craftsmen from remote areas of the country, has become a credible brand of rare exquisite indigenous handmade products.
  • “Hunar Haat”, which has become “Empowerment Exchange” of artisans and craftsmen from across the country, will restart from September 2020 with the theme of “Local to Global” and comparatively larger participation of artisans.
  • The Minority Affairs Ministry has organised more than 2 dozen “Hunar Haat” so far across the country where lakhs of artisans, craftsmen have been been provided employment and employment opportunities through these “Hunar Haat”.

Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval for implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) - A scheme to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries sector in India under two components namely, Central Sector Scheme (CS) and Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). The Scheme will be implemented during a period of 5 years.
Central Sector Scheme (CS):
a)  The entire project/unit cost will be borne by the Central government (i.e. 100% central funding).
Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS):
For the Non-beneficiary orientated sub-components/activities under CSS component to be implemented by the States/UTs, the entire project/unit cost will be shared between Centre and State as detailed below:
a)   North Eastern & Himalayan States: 90% Central share and 10% State share.
b)   Other States: 60% Central share and 40% State share.
c)   Union Territories (with legislature and without legislature): 100% Central share.
For the Beneficiary orientated i.e.  individual/group activities sub­components/activities under CSS component to be implemented by the States/UTs, the Government financial assistance of both Centre and State/UTs governments together will be limited to 40% of the project/unit cost for General category and 60% of the project/unit cost for SC/ST/Women. The Government financial assistance will in turn be shared between Centre and State/UTs in the following ratio:        
a)   The North Eastern & the Himalayan States: 90% Central share and 10% State share.
b)   Other States: 60% Central share and 40% State share.
c)  Union Territories (with legislature and without legislature): 100% Central share (No UT Share).

Benefits:
  1. Address the critical gaps in the fisheries sector and realize its potential.
  2. Augmenting fish production and productivity at a sustained average annual growth rate of about 9% to achieve a target of 22 million metric tons by 2024-25 through sustainable and responsible fishing practices.
  3. Improving availability of certified quality fish seed and feed, traceability in fish and including effective aquatic health management.
  4. Creation of critical infrastructure including modernisation and strengthening of value chain.
  5. Creation of direct gainful employment opportunities to about 15 lakh fishers, fish farmers, fish workers, fish vendors and other rural/urban populations in fishing and allied activities and about thrice this number as indirect employment opportunities including enhancement of their incomes.
  6. Boost to investments in fisheries sector and increase of competitiveness of fish and fisheries products.
  7. Doubling   of fishers, fish farmers and fish workers incomes by 2024
  8. Social, physical and economic security for fishers and fish workers.
