128th birth anniversary of Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis

Recognizing the importance of Statistics in day-to-day life and to popularize its use, the Government of India has been celebrating birth Anniversary of the legendary Statistician, late Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis, on 29th June, as “Statistics Day”. The theme selected for the “Statistics Day” 2021 was Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) - 2 (End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture).

About late Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis
The renowned scientist was born in Kolkata on June 29, 1893. This year’s National Statistics Day celebration marks the 128th birth anniversary of the Professor. He was the founder of the Indian Statistical Sciences (1931). 

About Mahalanobis model

The Second Planning commission Plan focused on the development of the public sector and "rapid Industrialisation". The plan followed the Mahalanobis model, an economic development model developed by the Indian statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in 1953. The plan attempted to determine the optimal allocation of investment between productive sectors in order to maximise long-run economic growth.

27th June 2021 celebrated across the India on occasion of 183rd birth anniversary of bankim chandra chattopadhyay. One of the most and celebrated writers the country has ever seen, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was born on June 7, 1838, in Naihati, Bengal Presidency, British India. He is the man behind our National Song - Vande Mataram, which originally was a Sanskrit stotra glorifying India as a mother goddess. The song was written to encourage and inspire the freedom fighters during the Independence Movement.

Freedom fighter Ram Prasad Bismil Birth Anniversary

As part of  Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Ministry of Culture organised a special ceremony at Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh to mark the birth anniversary of renowned freedom fighter Shaheed Ram Prasad Bismil.

About Ram Prasad Bismil
Pt. Ram Prasad Bismil, born on 11th June, 1897 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh was amongst the most notable Indian revolutionaries who fought against British colonialism. He wrote powerful patriotic poems in Urdu and Hindi under the pen name of Bismil from age of 19. He formed the Hindustan Republican Association with leaders like Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad and participated in the Mainpuri conspiracy of 1918, and the Kakori conspiracy of 1925 with Ashfaq Ullah Khan and Roshan Singh to  protest against the British Rule. He was martyred at Gorakhpur Jail on 19th December, 1927 just aged 30, for his role in Kakori conspiracy. While in jail, he wrote ‘Mera Rang De BasantiChola’ and ‘Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna’ which became the anthem for freedom fighters.

The President of India, in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, appointed Shri Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana as 48th Chief Justice of India.

About Article 124(2)
Article 124(2) states that every judge of the Supreme Court shall be appointed by the President of India by warrant under his hand and seal after consultation with such of the judges of the Supreme Court and of the High Courts in the states.

400th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of the High-Level Committee (HLC) to commemorate the 400th Birth Anniversary (Prakash Purab) of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, on 8th April 2021 through video conferencing. The meeting will discuss the year-long calendar of events planned to mark this special occasion. with year-long celebrations beginning April 12 this year.

About the High Level Committee
The HLC was constituted by the Union Government on 24th October 2020, to approve policies, plans and programs related to the commemoration of the 400th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji along with supervision of the events. The HLC has 70 members including the Prime Minister as Chairman.

About Guru Tegh Bahadur 
Guru Tegh Bahadur is the ninth of the ten Gurus who founded the Sikh religion. He was the head of the followers of Sikhism from 1665 until his killing in 1675.

Vietnam's legislature voted 5th April 2021 to make Pham Minh Chinh  Nguyen Xuan Phuc as President of Vietnam. Mr. Phuc scored the maximum votes among the almost 500-member rubber-stamp national Assembly. Mr. Phuc, was Vietnam’s PM for the last five years, a period in which the economy boomed, and his government’s COVID-19 response won plaudits at home and abroad.

​Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was appointed as the first female and first African Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). She will take up her post on March 1 and her term until August 31, 2025.

Director-General of the World Trade Organization
The director-general of the World Trade Organization is the officer of the World Trade Organization (WTO) responsible for supervising and directing the organization's administrative operations. Since the World Trade Organization's decisions are made by member states, through either a Ministerial Conference or through the General Council, the director-general has little power over matters of policy – the role is primarily advisory and managerial in nature. The director-general supervises the WTO secretariat of about 700 staff and is appointed by WTO members for a term of four years.​

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an intergovernmental organization that regulates and facilitates international trade between nations. Shri Subrahmanyan appointed Chairman of National Safety Council

Shri S. N. Subrahmanyan has been nominates by the Govt. of India as the Chairman of the National Safety Council for a period of three years. His experience is likely to guide the National Safety Council which has a major role to play to ensure safety in work places under new Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 (OSH Code, 2020).

About National Safety Council
The 24th Session of the Standing Labour Committee(Ministry of Labour, Government of India) accepted the proposal concerning the constitution of the National Safety Council (NSC) in February, 1966. Accordingly, NSC was set up on 4th March, 1966 by the Ministry of Labour, Government of India. It was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and subsequently, as a Public Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. The NSC will also be involved in framing the scheme for third party audit and certification under the OSH Code. The NSC is already working on the safety rating of establishments based on their OSH readiness and performance which can be extended through the country and linked to the inspection system.

A High Level Committee, headed by the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, has been constituted to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The High Level Committee will decide on the activities for a one year long commemoration, beginning 23rdJanuary 2021. The Members of the Committee include distinguished citizens, historians, authors, experts, family members of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, as well as eminent persons associated with Azad Hind Fauj (INA). The Committee will lend guidance to the commemoration activities in Delhi, Kolkata and other places associated with Netaji and Azad Hind Fauj, both in India as well as overseas.

Justice Hima Kohli was sworn in as Chief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana. She is the first woman Chief Justice of Telangana High Court .
Justice Hima Kohli was born on 2 September 1959 in New Delhi. In 1979, she earned a B.A. in History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. She later went on to earn a postgraduate degree in History from the University of Delhi, and a degree in law from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi.

Indian-American Raj Iyer was the first Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the U.S. Army

Indian-American Raj Iyer has taken over as the first Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the U.S. Army after the Pentagon created the position in July 2020. Iyer holds a Ph. D. from the University of Texas at Arlington along with multiple masters degrees, including a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas at Arlington. Iyer, originally a native of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, grew up in Bengaluru and completed his undergraduate studies at National Institute of Technology Tirchi before moving to the US to pursue higher studies.
